Block elder
The SS used the term "block elder" (Blockältester) for a prisoner who was placed in charge of the inmates in a block. These prisoner functionaries had great influence over the life and death of the prisoners. Quite a few block elders showed solidarity with the concentration camp inmates and did not serve as tools of the SS.
